Pack Up Your Troubles in a 1-Quart Bag

Effective Tuesday 25 September, the TSA is loosening its carry-on liquids ban. According to the announcement on the TSA web site, we can now “carry through security checkpoints travel-size toiletries (3 ounces or less) that fit comfortably in ONE, QUART-SIZE, clear plastic, zip-top bag” (TSA’s emphasis ) and “bring beverages and other items purchased in the secure boarding area on-board aircraft”. The zip-top bag will have to be pulled out of your luggage to allow screeners to examine your toiletries, so you still need to be careful about packing embarrassing personal effects.

Given that I’ve repacked my toiletries kit with all-solid toiletries (the most recent addition being a stick of solid hair wax), I’m actually more excited by being allowed to bring my coffee on-board. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve burned my mouth trying to chug a tall Starbucks coffee in the boarding line.

I’m glad someone applied a dose of common sense to the liquids ban…

I can understand the security implications and necessity to perhaps prohibit liquids/gels/etc before security (until some technology can detect liquid explosives); however, if you can buy it once you’re on the other side of the screening stations, why shouldn’t you be allowed to bring it on board?

Finally, a sensible decision…I’m especially glad, b/c, coming from Japan, all my flights to the US will be a minimum of 3 hours (to Guam) or up to 12 (other entry points). I kind of like to have my own drinks so as not to have to bother the flight attendants any more than necessary.

Keep up the great work on the podcasts and posts. I really enjoy them.

I agree. Starbucks coffee is too “darn” hot…

A quick note on Starbucks, you can order your drink at 140 degrees – warm enough to drink fast when you’re in a hurry but not so hot you feel as though you’ve bought a cup of lava.
