Recorded in the TravelCommons studios outside of Chicago on a rare full week in town after trips to Amsterdam and Kansas City. In this episode, an unusual flight delay makes us think about embracing the delay rather than fighting it, and snatching a couple hour vacation in Amsterdam allows us to explore some high and low culture. Listener comments include suggestions on easy-to-pack workout shoes and a question on how to make air travel greener. Here’s a direct link to the podcast file.

Zen of Delays
-
- Listener pointed to a Conde Nast’s Portfolio.com article titled “What I Learned on the Road This Year — Traveling for business is a Zen practice: Keep your head down and take good notes”
- Don’t know if it’s Zen, with its emphasis on mindful acceptance of the present moment, or ju jitsu, with its training on using your attacker’s energy against him – the sort of “bend like a willow, don’t break like the oak” thinking
- This is, of course, completely antithetical to the concept of a “road warrior” – one who controls every aspect of their travel experience
- My Amsterdam flight was delayed for 3 hours by a United baggage handler trying to take a shortcut underneath our 767
- Beer makes the Zen thing a whole lot easier
- Flowing around the evening’s obstacles I ended up in a more comfortable place
- Bridge Music — Central Calm is by Skywards

- Focused on seeing just two things — Van Gogh Museum and the Red Light District
- Thought about sampling the wares of one of the “coffee houses” but then thought better of it

Mark,
Interesting take on going with the flow during travel. It reminded me of when my cousin was stopping through Tokyo to visit us on his way back to the US. He’d been abroad for a about 6 weeks for some Taoist medicine training in China and Vietnam, both challenging travel destinations in their own right. Due to work, we couldn’t meet him at the airport. We played phone and email tag for several hours before we finally connected.
We were a little worried until he called to say that he realized that he had been fighting the experience rather than flowing with it. He ended up taking a 2 hour nap in a quiet corner at Narita to get re-centered. A couple of hours later, with a refreshed perspective, everything worked out. When we finally tracked him down for our short visit, he was the picture of repose, quietly reading Dostoevsky. A good example of how sometimes you just need to take a step back, take a deep breath, and trust that somehow, everything will work out. I’ve never been in a situation where it hasn’t.
Kudos on the move, and I’m enjoying the collection of other blogs and podcasts at The Boarding Area.
Keep up the great work.
That’s why my iPod and soundblocking headphones are my best friends in such situations. Usually, there is nothing I can do about it. Suddenly I am worlds away enjoying a good podcast or movie.
There’s gotta be a way to work Bose into Zen koan…
