Podcast #56 – Lines Around the World; Shedding Some Electronic Weight

Recorded in the San Francisco Airport Marriott, a recent city-a-day business trip through Europe allowed me to do a first-hand comparison of the European air travel experience to the much maligned state of US air travel. We also update our thoughts on the state of mobile computing devices. Is it possible to travel “PC-less” yet, or are we still one release away from leaving the laptop at home? Here’s a direct link to the podcast file.

Here are the show notes from TravelCommons podcast #56:

  • The poor state of the US air travel experience is the travel topic de jure this summer
  • My city-a-day business trip through Europe last month gave me a first-hand comparison of between the European and US air travel experiences
  • Spent more time in lines in European airports but had much fewer flight delays once on the plane
  • European gate agents and security screeners less polite than in the US, but airplanes were in better shape and the in-flight service much nicer
  • All in all, the European experience was better, but not by the margin I had expected
  • Bridge Music — Une Rose Noire by Paul Cargnello
  • Ed Vawter’s latest episode of the Searching the Internet podcast focuses on mobile search sites
  • My T-Mobile GSM Blackberry allows me to go PC-less if I only need to track e-mail
  • The Google Maps application for the Blackberry was very handy for finding a Paris restaurant recommended by a friend
  • Apple’s iPhone can almost, but not quite, replace a PC
  • The high probability of a long flight delay means you want to bring along a device on which you can do real work — a PC
  • Closing music — iTunes link to Pictures of You by Evangeline
  • Bridge music from IODA Promonet

I was a little surprised about your comment about the, err… close personal service you experienced from the security staff at AMS as I’ve never seen that. And then I came back from LAX via AMS at the weekend. You’re right, the security people have started… cupping (?) when patting down. They did this despite the fact that I did not set off the alarm on the metal detector. I was quite shocked by this and wonder if it’s just one employee with a fetish or whether it’s a new policy. Whatever it is, it’s quite unpleasant.
