Spent all week at home and ended up catching a cold from my son. This week’s topics are spurred by listener e-mails and web postings. We talk about bad experiences with rude TSA screeners, some thoughts about travel toiletries, and the cost of broadband on the road. Here’s a direct link to the podcast file.

Here are the show notes from TravelCommons podcast #31:

  • Intro music — Warmth by Makkina
  • Recorded in the TravelCommons studio in suburban Chicago
  • No travel this week, but making up for it next week with travel to Memphis, Phoenix, and LA
  • Go through the listener demographics from the Podtrac listener survey
  • Bridge Music — State Trooper by Bruce Springsteen
  • Direct Link to the Sierra Mist Super Bowl commercial poking fun at TSA screeners
  • A listener tells about getting yelled at by a BWI TSA screener for attempting to take a pencil sharpener on a flight
  • Direct Link to a BBC web site article quoting a former TSA official about problems being caused by overzealous officers
  • Bridge Music — Pictures of You by Evangeline
  • A bad Gillette Super Bowl commercial for a 5-blade razor reminds me of the old Saturday Night Live sketch about how silly a 3-blade razor would be
  • A listener talks about how shopping for toiletries forces him to explore new cities
  • My advice is to keep it simple — take only what you really need and leave the battery-powered stuff at home
  • No room for Metrosexuals in the Road Warrior ranks
  • Bridge Music — The Shadowlands by Ryan Adams
  • A listener thinks that hotel broadband charges are the latest in a growing trend of nickel-&-dime charges
  • Many travelers are setting up free Wi-Fi “bubbles” with their travel wireless routers
  • Use the free program NetStumbler to find free “bubbles” before paying the hotel fees
  • Closing music — Ramblin’ Man by the Allman Brothers Band

Flew into Memphis Monday night took the Hertz bus no Marvin. I flew back out this morning and I was all set to inform Marvin of his somewhat famous podcast stature, but instead of Marvin I had Melvin as a driver. Marvin where are you……..

We might have been on the same Hertz bus on Monday evening — I came on the AA flight at 6:10pm and, yes, no Marvin. I flew out Tuesday afternoon and had Pauline instead. I had my iRiver all ready to grab a quick interview with the Smooth Jazz voice of Hertz himself, but to no avail…

If you don’t have an issue with the name of the company, San Francisco based “Nancy Boy” has the BEST ‘metrosexual’ shaving cream on the planet. It even comes in a travel size. Well worth trying out.

I’ll try it out as long as the name doesn’t show up on my credit card statement — my wife will start wondering. Especially if she goes to the web site and reads “Here at Nancy Boy, the customer is always Queen.” Not that there is anything wrong with that…

Yeah, you know I really like the idea of carrying a badger brush along (nice idea), but I just can not give up the NB shave cream. It is that good. Even if the name DOES show up on the CC statement…
